Timberland's waterproof leather ankle boot has been a wardrobe staple since the brand introduced injection moulded sole technology in 1965, fusing the upper to the sole without stitching to create a genuinely waterproof construction that holds up in real conditions. Dr Martens brings its Goodyear welted Chelsea and lace up styles, with the air cushion sole that made the brand a fixture from factory floors to concert venues from the 1960s onwards.

Palladium, born in France in 1947 and originally supplying boots to the French Foreign Legion, produces canvas and leather ankle boots that are light, durable and water resistant. Ariat came from equestrian roots in California in 1993 and produces Chelsea and lace up leather boots that cross over well from rural to urban wear.
